Featured Campground Session – Better UI Development with Metawidget

June 1st, 2010
by Pete Muir

Come hear Pete Muir, Principal Software Engineer from Red Hat, and Richard Kennard from Kennard Consulting, discuss UI Development in their hosted campground session.

Title: Better UI Development with Metawidget

Date: Thursday, June 24

Time: 5:00pm

Abstract:
Most enterprise applications require many different data entry forms, either for collecting or displaying data. Most developers build these forms using either a visual tool (like Matisse) or a UI language (like Facelets). But both these approaches are laborious, error prone and violate D.R.Y. – by requiring you to repeat in your front-end what is already defined in your back-end. Some developers use code generators (like Naked Objects) but such tools generally dictate what technologies you must use, and produce very generic-looking CRUD UIs.

In this session we’ll introduce Metawidget, a community Open Source project specifically designed to address these common pain points. We will discuss:

  • Why current approaches to form development are unsatisfactory
  • How Metawidget enables you to use any combination of back-end technologies
  • How Metawidget enables you to use any combination of front-end technologies, including different UI frameworks and mixing third-party widget libraries
  • How Metawidget fits in with your existing UI design process, leveraging the full flexibility of your existing toolkit to create highly usable UIs
